March 22nd, 2008 Port Canaveral and Ponce Inlet Fishing Reports

Today was the first day in over a week that the water was extremely calm. Which finally made for beautiful fishing conditions. The weather over the past week has been very windy but fish able. Fishing in the New Smyrna Beach area is always possible do to the protected areas to fish. It is the same way in Oak Hill as well. It was glass today for several hours. The Mosquito Lagoon continues to hold numerous fish. The best bait of the day was live mullet. To use a live mullet effectively do the following: Approach tailing fish VERY stealthy. Hooking them just behind the dorsal by the tail. Throw him just within reach of the tailing red fish and let the mullet do the rest. Get within 10 feet or so. Use circle hooks for best hook set and for the highest survival rate. Today we landed several reds in the 20-30 inch range. Not much longer until the tarpon and snook will begin to show up in big numbers.

Do no use a trolling motor in 2 feet or less of water or within 600 feet of feeding fish. Use your push pole. If you do not have a means of pushing then stay out of areas this shallow or wait until they come to you. Not to be mean it is just common sense. Just like flats boats do not belong in the Atlantic on rough days or on Lake Michigan at all. I see too many bay boats and deep vee hull boats going into shallow grass flats that should not be in and then gunning their engines to get out. Even your trolling motor does severe grass bed damage. Also stay away from other anglers. The MINUMUM distance between you and another boat while stalking fish is at least 600 feet. Do not follow other boats because they may be turning around to do another sweep of that area. There is more than enough water out here to move around. I heard a boats trolling motor the other day that was over two football fields from me slapping the top of the water. If I can hear that then well the fish can for sure. I could see the fish in front of their boat staying way out in front of them as they were chasing them farther and farther away with the noise. I like to free-line my mullet.

Mosquito Lagoon fly fishing seems to be improving as well with the winds laying down. A mullet patterned fly with a darker color will be your best bet for red fish and even trout. A few reports of fly fishing with crab patterns have been reported as well. Sight fishing the flats of back country waters either using the D.O.A. 1/2 oz. shrimp in several colors or fly fishing is the dominant way of getting hooked up.

Good reports have been coming in from several different places for beach fishing. Ponce Inlet fishing reports have been good with awesome sights of cobia running and being landed. Find the rays and find the fish. Port Canaveral fishing reports have been great as well for cobia too along with a few kings. Cobia fishing will improve as April approaches. West winds will be your friend for this.
