With the full moon two days behind us and the water coming in at around noon, the back waters are prime targets for reds! As the flats begin to flood the fish wait to charge the flats as if the blue light mud minnow special has arrived. I like to fish the northern end of the Lagoon due to the massive amount of oyster bars everywhere. Bait fish hug these like deer around corn fields.
In between the bars are numerous grass flats with trout sitting still, waiting to attack. Fish all these areas with extreme caution! Not only stealth to or for approach but also for safety. When the waters rise, the oyster bars submerge which in return hides them. We all know what bars like that can do to a boats hull. The best way to learn these areas any north all the way up to and including the New Smyrna Beach area is to go in at LOW TIDE. If you can navigate through low tide you can go in when it is high tide. Fishing these areas are very simple...SLOW. Use plastics or cut or live mullet and work areas that have good bank and good sand holes. Top water has been slow because of water temps taking time to warm up. With the water as clear as it has been sight fishing is at its peak too. As always, if you come around a corner and see someone else fishing the area you want to fish, be nice and leave. If we all practice this the experience level will rise.
