January 8th, 2008 -; Mosquito Lagoon Charters and Indian River Fly Fishing Guide Report

Today was the first really beautiful day of the New Year to be on the water. This is a great time of year with not only the fishing great but the play offs are on as well. Where else in the world can you go out and catch some saltwater inshore game fish and then get back in time to watch some football. All with great weather at hand.

Well we started out around 7a.m. and headed to the North West part of the Mosquito Lagoon. Twisting and turning through all the little creeks and islands we arrived at out destination to find the water like a sheet of glass. SMOOTH! Right of the bat we could spot several reds and a few seatrout off in the distance, so we decided to pole towards them and see what might happen. As we started with fly fishing using a crab pattern fly on a 5 weight fly rod we could see this was going to work. Also be sure your line is a floating weight forward fly line. Fly fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon is the best. There is no place on the planet better to do this year around.

Then I was trying the Skitter Walk and my client was using a soft plastic D.O.A. bait shrimp. Not within more than 10 minutes we or I should say he landed the first fish. A redfish about 22 inches. With the water temp around 53 degrees at sunrise the red drum are being very sluggish. We switched to the soft plastic too; with this approach you can work it very slowly and allow the fish to see it, react to it and then eat it. By the time the sun came out it was around 10a.m. and we decided to fish further north.

Working Oyster Bars and hard sand bars we we able to land by the end of the day 15 trout and 7 redfish. Again Eldora area was HOT! Not only is this area great but never crowded. Using fly fishing and spin fishing throughout the afternoon.
