August 25th, 2007 Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Fishing Reports Went out today by myself. (On several days when I am off from guided charter trips, I still find myself fishing all the time. This is a good thing to look for in when hiring a charter guide. Someone who is on the water all the time. Not a part time Pro or what I like to call a "Squatter Guide". Never be afraid to ask a potential guide how often he fishes (with or without a client) and if this is his only means of employment or at least the hours they put in. Sure you can have some "extra work". You get so many guides out here that say they are full time on the Mosquito Lagoon, when they are not. They work full time at other jobs and guide on the side maybe guiding 10-40 days a year. A bunch of guides work in Alaska or Canada during the summer months and guide here in the winter and do not know the year around fishing patterns. These guides only know how to follow the fishing, not the fishing itself. You also have several captains who say they run charters on the refuge or Seashore, however when you go to the National Parks web site they have a current list of guides who are allowed on their land and it is updated daily. Well and behold that they are not on it. They know who they are and they know they are using a "bait and switch tactic". I will actually call it false advertising. They use the key words "Mosquito Lagoon" to get high rankings and attract a potential client then tell them the fishing is not good there this time of year and to fish in their area. When in fact they just did not pay the fees or did not pass the background check that law enforcement does. The bottom line is call the Canaveral National Seashore and ask them if the guide you want to hire is legally allowed to take you fishing on the waters within the park and the refuge. Makes you wonder about these tactics on how their trips will be. I pride myself in saying I am full time and I am on the water around 185 days a year with a client and then on the water another 100 plus or so days for myself. I am also a year round full time Florida resident with private property on the Mosquito Lagoon and a boat ramp for you to use. I am two minutes from the waters we will be fishing.
