August 8th, 2007 Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Fishing Reports The past several weeks have been yielding nice catches of trout and a few nice redfish. Pig fish have been the best choice for an early bite. The north end of the Mosquito Lagoon has been the most productive area. Arrive to a spot you think might produce and position yourself so as to cast to the bar along the drop off. I like to put my piggish on a float. Just a small float that clips on so I can keep him just off the bottom. The bite has been dropping off around 930 or so for the trout. I went to the flats from here and stalked out some reds. A typical Florida summer day! Perfect! Also at the south is the Banana River, which has been hot in its own way. The area has been producing big redfish on cut mullet. Tarpon are thick and rolling through the entire Mosquito Lagoon. The south end by the Whale Tale has just been epic! I like to fish this end pretty often within the year as to it is an old stomping ground for me and always produces fish. Fly fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon has been great! Perfect casts to waiting redfish will produce great runs. Shrimp and crab fly patterns will work best. Captain Drew Cavanaugh |
