January 18th, 2008 Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna Beach Fishing Reports
The past few days have been not optimal for flats fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon. We have had very high winds and then a ton of rain. Friday was about the only decent day to go out...Even then the weather man needs to take some refresher course on predictions. In other words he was off, way off. Days where the flats are tough to fish you can fish the waters of the Indian River in areas such as Cocoa Beach, Titusville, New Smyrna Beach and so on... Friday started out very overcast and calm. We hit the Edgewater end with the tide coming in at around mid morning or so. The fishing was slow with a couple of smaller red fish and a few trout. Mixed in were several nice whiting and black drum. We caught all the fish on D.O.A. 1/4 oz. shrimps in the Nite Glow pattern. We tried to free line a few mullet but the birds were resent less. Work the bait very slow still, remember this when water temps are in the low 60's. However fly fishing was not bad for about an hour. This time of year I like to have my clients throw a crab patterned shrimp in any of the natural colors of our crabs here on the Mosquito Lagoon. Mosquito Lagoon fly fishing trips can be tough at times as to always with sight fishing the flats. The approach and distance to the fish is the key tactical point. Just take your time and things will fall into place. By the time it got closer to noon the winds and rain had picked up to the point to where we were done. The original forecast called for 5 mph winds out of the NW and a high of 68. With a 20% chance of rain... They were so far off it was not funny. Weathermen are idiots. Come on you can not predict the future! The next day, Saturday was like this. My neighbors 6 year old is applying for the job now... Even she will tell you we are in Florida and the weather could do any thing. Call today to book your Indian River fly fishing trip and Mosquito Lagoon fly fishing outfitters.
