January 10th, 2008 New Smyrna Beach Fishing Reports Today was yet another beautiful central Florida day. You can not ask for any better fishing conditions. The highs in the 70's and the water temps around 65 to 75 degrees by days end. The light winds have allowed for perfect sight fishing. Mosquito Lagoon fly fishing guides love this time of year. The far north side of the Mosquito Lagoon has been an excellent spot for large schools of red fish and some very massive gator trout. The red fish have been schooled up in some secluded areas and have been pressured very much by the locals very hard. Use extreme stealth when approaching these fish and get there early as to stake your spot. Please if you see someone fishing an area, just go and fish another area and respect that. A good distance between you and another boat is at least 600 feet or more. The waters out here have so many spots to fish. Live mullet have been producing well by just free lining it is your best bet. Cut mullet and dead shrimp will work great too. Fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon with a shrimp pattern with a well placed cast will produce great action. The trout have been following behind the reds and acting as clean up or almost like a sheep dog. Staying their distance but still there. Soft plastics such as D.O. A.'s and top water plugs will work great too. The other areas of interest are the Banana River, and the back country waters of the south end of the Mosquito Lagoon. Of course as always for the canoe or kayak and small flats boats there is no place better to launch and fish at than the Canaveral National Seashore's Apollo Beach Ramp in New Smyrna Beach by JB's Fish Camp. You can find large numbers of redfish and other species all around the Eldora flats, Orange Island, Slippery creek area and Turner flats area. The nice thing about this area is the ease at which you can get to them. Also very protected waters to get out of the cold winds at times. Turtle Mound Creek this time of year holds huge numbers of trophy fish and is usually not too crowded. Again the water levels have been going from very high to extremely low... So use caution when coming and going. Not only for the vessel but to the area. Have fun and be safe. Florida Inshore Fishing Charters Site Map Captain Drew Cavanaugh |
