November 4th, 2007 Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Fishing Reports The winds have finally subsided today. A cold front has moved in. However with a high of 80 degrees out, it does not feel this cold. We headed north, by the New Smyrna Beach area. Just outside the Mosquito Lagoon area boundaries to fish the backcountry waters. Fishing up this way you will find a large amount of oyster bars... Versus south are sand bars. These bars produce large amounts of fish. Trout and redfish are thick in these areas in the middle of winter and summer months bring in the snook and tarpon by the tons. Fly fishing New Smyrna Beach this time of year is outstanding. Redfish are all around the Orange Island area and Turtle Mound Creek. The fishing at the Eldora House Flats and all of the area around JB's Fish Camp has been outstanding. This area in the winter time is some of the best on the Mosquito Lagoon. Easy boat launching for the smaller boats such as canoes and kayaks or small flats boats at the north entrance to Canaveral National Seashore can not be beat. Ask the park for an annual pass for even more savings too. A fly fishing paradise bar none. All kinds of bait fish like hanging around these oyster bars as well in the area. In return a large amount of predators hang out in search of these baits. I like using the D.O.A. plastics up here with just a hook. No weights. This is to be worked very slowly. this allows the D.O.A. to drop down to the bottom where redfish and flounder are lurking. Trout will hit these plastics as if it is their last meal. Slow presentation also makes the bait look wounded. By the days end we had landed 10 reds, 7 trout and 2 flounders... Not bad for a days work. Remember to handle the fish you release with extra care for a high survival rate. Catch and release saves your future of fishing. Captain Drew Cavanaugh |
